Democratic and Republican congressional leaders are at the White House for a meeting with President Donald Trump on Monday, in a late effort to avoid a government shutdown. If government funding legislation isn’t passed by Congress and signed by Trump on Tuesday night, many government offices across the nation will be temporarily shuttered and nonexempt federal employees will be furloughed. Republicans are daring Democrats to vote against legislation that would keep government funding mostly at current levels, but Democrats have held firm. They’re using one of their few points of leverage to demand Congress take up legislation to extend health care benefits.
An attorney for the 22-year-old man charged with killing Charlie Kirk has asked a judge for more time to review the large amount of evidence before deciding if the defense will seek a preliminary hearing. Prosecutors have charged Tyler Robinson with aggravated murder. They plan to seek the death penalty. A preliminary hearing would determine if there is enough evidence against Robinson to go forward with a trial. A brief hearing was held Monday in Provo. It was just a few miles from the Utah Valley University campus where the Sept. 10 shooting occurred. The judge set the next hearing for Oct. 30.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has officially withdrawn from the mayoral race, citing a year of scandal and political turmoil.
Adams pointed to a dismissed federal corruption case and intense media scrutiny as reasons he could not mount a serious campaign.

A deadly shooting erupted Saturday night in Southport, North Carolina, when a man opened fire from a boat into a crowd at a waterfront bar.
Three people were killed and five others injured in the attack. Police have identified the suspect as Nigel Edge, who is now facing three counts of first-degree murder.
Southport Police Chief Todd Coring said the shooting was “highly premeditated” and that the location was specifically targeted.
