The Pentagon announced on Monday that Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan has approved a Homeland Security request to assign 320 “personnel” to babysit illegal immigrants, driving them, feeding them and checking on their welfare.

The Washington Times reports the troops were assigned the new duties in order to free up Border Patrol agents so they can get back to patrolling the front lines.

In a statement, Shanahan said the DoD personnel will not take custody of illegal immigrants, or provide protection to the troops themselves.

Those duties will be handled by Homeland Security officers. The move comes after more than 50,000 families were caught jumping the border in March alone, overwhelming Border Patrol.
