President Biden is mourning the death of an American citizen whose body has apparently been held by Hamas for more than a year.

According to the Israeli military, an Israeli-American soldier who was believed to have been captured alive by Hamas in the Oct. 7 attack last year was killed that day and his body taken into the Gaza Strip.

In a White House statement, the president said he was “devastated and outraged” to learn of the death of Omer Neutra. The 21-year-old, who grew up in New York, was serving as a tank commander in the Israel Defense Forces.
