The musicians of First Baptist Church in Clarksville, Tennessee deliver a stunning rendition of ‘In Christ Alone.’ The magnificent composition and inspiring lyrics, written by Keith Getty and Stuart Townend, are performed wonderfully by about ten instrumentalists and primary vocalists and a choir of approximately twenty more individuals. Their performance is captivating!
‘In Christ Alone’ was the first writing collaboration between Keith Getty and Stuart Townend, both from the United Kingdom. When the two songwriters met at a worship event in 2000, they decided to create some songs together. They began the first project in 2000 and completed ‘In Christ Alone’ in January 2001.
Keith Getty shared the primary goal of the song during a lecture and Q&A session in Louisville, Kentucky. He stated, “The idea was to write a hymn that declared the whole life of Christ in a song.”
In an interview with WorshipTogether, Stuart Townend spoke about writing the lyrics after hearing the melody Keith had penned. He said, “he sent me this melody, and as soon as I heard it, it had a grandeur about it, [and] I thought ‘this needs some strong lyrics.’ So I sat down, and as I wrote it, I just began to develop the whole theme of the life, death, resurrection of Christ, and what that means for us in our lives.”
The first effort of the Getty-Townend writing team was an astounding success! ‘In Christ Alone’ appeared on CCLI’s (Christian Copyright Licensing International) “Top 25 CCLI Songs” American songs list for the first time in February 2008. It had appeared on the CCLI chart for Canada, Australia, and New Zealand prior to that.
Here are four lines from the second verse of ‘In Christ Alone:’
‘In Christ alone, who took on flesh
Fullness of God in helpless babe
This gift of love and righteousness
Scorned by the ones He came to save’
Whether covered by famous artists—Newsboys, Sawtooth Bluegrass Band, Christian Grimmie, Kristian Stanfill, Natalie Grant, or others—or sung by passionate and super talented worship bands like First Clarksville’s, the music and message of “In Christ Alone” connects deeply with listeners.
