Domestic Reflections On The Iranian Situation

Wednesday, May 6, 2026

As the military conflict with Iran has progressed to its current state it has been quite revelatory concerning our domestic politics.  It is not just that is widened the left/right divide, blah, blah, blah.  We need to think about it in far more serious terms. Although…. . .

Your Tax Dollars At Work

Tuesday, May 5, 2026

California has one of the highest tax burdens in the nation.  It also has one of the biggest economies in the world.  That tax burden combined with that economy should be producing a massive pool of money.  And yet each year, California finds itself having to overcome a deficit situation – usually on paper only.  Anyone with any sense would have to conclude California has a spending problem.  Gee, how could that be?. . .

To Be Christian

Sunday, May 3, 2026

Wednesday past, I write a post about how to fix what was wrong with us.  It was written in the wake of yet another attempt to assassinate the president.  It was a call to be overtly Christian.  Unfortunately, the evil kept on rolling through the rest of the week as we learned the Biden DOJ wanted top prosecute nuns, and Democrats in Maine have effectively nominated a Nazi for U.S. Senate.  In light of that continuous advance of evil, yesterday I berated primarily denominational Protestants for failing to be so overtly Christian.  I think this Sunday morning we should examine with a bit more depth just what it means to be overtly Christian.. . .

When The Hatred Keeps On Rolling

Saturday, May 2, 2026

We began the week just past trying to figure out a guy that wanted to shoot the president.  We ended it looking at how hatred had eroded decency so much that the DOJ wanted to prosecute nuns for daring to believe Christian doctrine.  I wish it stopped with hating nuns, but no – Maine Democrats have gone and effectively crowned a guy that claims he is not a Nazi while sporting a Nazi tattoo.  Jim Geraghty did his best to point out how remarkably absurd it is.  It was funny when Monty Python pointed out the absurdity of Nazism because it was in the rearview mirror.  It is not funny when one of the major parties in this nation selects one to stand for U.S. Senate and you can see Nazism out of the windshield.. . .

Hating Trump Is One Thing – Hating Nuns Is Another Thing Altogether

Friday, May 1, 2026

Remember when the FBI decided label Catholics as “domestic extremists?”  Everybody thought it was that one office.  It wasn’t, it was systemic and it was really, really ugly.  Turns out the Biden administration wanted to prosecute nuns – NUNS! – for, well, being nuns and believing what the Roman Catholic Church believes.  This was in the DOJ, not the FBI – it was systemic.  As typical, the story is all over the conservative press and not a peep to be found or heard amongst legacy media.. . .

The Fine Line

Thursday, April 30, 2026

Sunday just past marked the 40th anniversary of the accident at Chernobyl – an accident the aftermath of which the world will be dealing with for centuries to come.  As I have said before, I was there about 5 years after.  Typically such a disaster illustrates the worst and brings out the best in people.  The worst is illustrated by the fact that it happened at all.  The best was the response of people in ingenuity, effort and sacrifice.  I will not endeavor to tell the tale again, but I will refer you to the excellent 2019 miniseries “Chernobyl.”  What fascinates me is it still, to this day, illustrates the fine line between the best and the worst in people.. . .

How Do We Fix It?

Wednesday, April 29, 2026

The host is looking for ways to fix what ails the nation in the current wave of “political violence.”  The essential question is how do we produce people like the shooter and how do we stop it?  In his latest Fox column he talks about reading “old” books –  that is doubled down upon in his interview with Aaron MacLean on yesterday’s show, while MacLean notes that can be difficult as a matter of policy. (behind the paywall)  In his interview with James Lileks tenure for public school teachers is rejected as the heart of the issue.  The discussion centered on how the internet allows one to be completely steeped in nonsense and how education itself is now as much nonsense as education.  Both avenues of discussion hit the target but failed to land blows fatal to the issue at hand, they are necessary but far from sufficient.  More is needed.. . .

As Close To Fun As We Can Get Right Now

Tuesday, April 28, 2026

I am in desperate need of some fun right now.  I think we all are.  So I set aside this article, based on the headline, because I thought it was funny – “Scientists Discover Plants “Scream” – We Just Couldn’t Hear Them Until Now.”  I cannot help but ask – if a tree falls in the forest and no one is there to hear, does it make a sound?  The latter question is about the intersection of science, philosophy and what actually matters.  So I guess the story about plants “screaming” is silly or not silly depending on your perspective.  Do sounds that the human ear cannot hear actually matter?  Are they even “a sound” at all or just pressure changes in the atmosphere?  Most importantly, just how much money was spent to determine that plants make noise, of any sort?. . .
